Issue #228: Penny

1 Yard
RIP to the penny. Apparently this past Wednesday was the last day a US mint printed the penny. The last I heard, it costs the government something like 3.5 cents to produce the penny. I think our loss is greater for the nickel and perhaps other coins? Here’s my question, over the next few years, are we going to see things priced more to the 0 of 5th cent? If something is $4.99 today will is be $4.95 in the future? $5.00? $5.05? The 99 cents was always supposed to be a marketing tactic to get you to think you were paying a dollar less than you actually were. Going down to 95 cents still accomplishes this, but I can’t imagine companies surrounding profit, even if we’re only talking a few cents. Anyways, enough on that. I did want to stick to the whole “1” theme. In this case, one penny = one yard.
One yard doesn’t get you much in fantasy — 0.1 points to be exact. But if at the end of that one yard is the end zone, that 0.1 points all of a sudden turns into 6.1. That’s a difference maker. That’s a funny thing about fantasy, a TD is worth six points no matter if it comes from the one yard line or 30, and yet, we feel as though we’re getting cheated if the team we’re playing against has a few players who capitalize from the one. Who are the kings of the one-yard TD? I’m glad you asked. Let’s explore the top-five:
Marcus Allen, 56 one-yard TDs (46% of his total career rushing TDs)
John Riggins, 52 one-yard TDs (50% of his total career rushing TDs)
Emmitt Smith, 47 one-yard TDs (29% of his total career rushing TDs)
Jerome Bettis, 43 one-yard TDs (47% of his total career rushing TDs)
LaDainian Tomlinson, 42 one-yard TDs (29% of his total career rushing TDs)
The active leader in one-yard TDs is none other than King Henry (36). This is good for 10th all-time. Not too far behind him is Jalen Hurts who if you recall cleaned house last year with one-yard scores. This was something I grabbed in Nov ’24:

He ended the season with 11, tied for most all-time in a single season. We were saying it last year too, just imagine what more of a season Saquon would’ve had if a few of these went his way. Perhaps it would’ve been enough to secure MVP.
Roll Call
I’ll be transparent with you all, emails have been on the lighter side this season. When I hear from you, it tells me that I’m still reaching an audience that enjoys the sport and fantasy football as much as me. I’ve talked about how I feel like there has been an over-saturation of fantasy-related content recently & this could be a reason why emails are light. But TDF is different! You and I both know this. So please don’t be shy. We’re a little over midway through the season. I want to hear how your season is going. Send in your record and some thoughts to go along with it. I want to hear from you!
Gut Feeling

Most of the time my gut serves me right and what it’s telling me today is that it’ll be worth going all in on NYG next year. You’re hearing it here first, the Dart/Nabers combo will be one not to reckon with. Add in Skattebo and there’s an argument to be made for drafting the trio. One thing that we’ll need to be conscious of with this prediction is that one of the reasons for Dart’s outperformance this season is because of his running. He’s averaging 35 rushing yards and 1 rushing TD per game. Skattebo will eat into this and with a new HC on the horizon, who knows what they’ll be scheming up as well.
